Serengeti National ParkSerengeti National Park is undoubtedly the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequalled for its natural beauty and scientific value. With more than two million wildebeest, half a million Thomson's gazelle, and a quarter of a million zebra, it has the greatest concentration of plains game in Africa. The wildebeest and zebra moreover form the star cast of a unique spectacular - the annual Serengeti migration.

Circuit: Northern Area: 14,763sq km Gazetted: - 1929 - British colonial declared 2,286 sq km of central Serengeti including Seronera as a full game reserve. - 1940 - This area was extended to a "closed game reserve" where certain species were totally protected. - 1951 - Formally gazetted as a national park with an area of 25,500 sqkm - 1959 - Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area was excised from Serengeti. - 1965 - The Lamai Wedge, an area between the Masai Mara and Kenya was added to Serengeti. - 1981 - Serengeti was made a World Heritage site and declared a Biosphere Reserve. Topography: Open grasslands in the southeastern areas, to the north are the open woodlands, and in the west are a combination of grasslands and woodlands. Birdlife: Ostrich, buzzards, kori bustards, oxpeckers, egrets, several species of vultures, fish eagles, bateleur eagles, hammerkops, storks, strlings, lilac-breasted roller, european roller, secretary bird, helmeted guinea fowl, grey-breasted spurfowl, yellow-throated sandgrouse, egyptian geese, fisher's lovebird, yellow-collared lovebird. Best time to visit: The Serengeti can be visited rewardingly all year round, but if migration is your thing, then observe the following guidelines: Ndutu: (December to May) When the migration begins and wildebeest calve. Moru Kopjes: (All year around) Plenty of water supply. Western Corridor: (June to October) Plenty of food at this time of the year and there also resident game year around. Seronera: (All year round with the months of January to March and June to October being the preferred months) Migration cuts across the park from the Western Corridor and head towards the north-east. Lobo Area: (June to July) Migration passes on their way northwards. Short-Grass Plains: (November to December) Migration enters this area coming from the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Weather On safari, temperatures are typically in the 70s - 80s during the day, cooling off to the 50s - 60s in the evening. The Ngorongoro Crater is over 7,000' high so you can count on the evenings being cool regardless of season. Maybe a mother has kept her maiden name of perhaps the children are from different unions. Whatever the reason, you’ll want to be able to prove that, yes, these kids are really yours. Even if you are the nuclear family, copies of birth certificates aren't a bad thing to have along if passports are lost or stolen - Parental permission - If you're traveling with your kids without your spouse, you may need proof that the absent parent has given permission for the child to travel with you. It's simple enough to write up a letter, sign it, have it witnessed and notarized. - The checked luggage allowance on the internal flight from the Serengeti to Arusha is 33 pounds. Please pack accordingly. Travelers flying home on Day 9 can store extra luggage in Arusha while on safari. - Casual attire is acceptable for Africa. Neutral, light-colored clothing is best for the safari, to blend into the landscape and not alarm the wildlife. Khaki is always a good color while on safari. - Be prepared to hand wash your clothes (quick-drying materials are best). Laundry services are available at some lodges for an additional cost. - Stuff sacks are great for sorting your gear. Plastic bags are also helpful to separate clean and dirty clothing. - If you normally wear contacts, bring a pair of glasses in case of irritation from dust in your eyes. - Many of the roads in Africa are deeply rutted and dusty. It is a good idea to pack camera equipment and binoculars in plastic bags to protect them from the dust. This is in addition to their normal cases. Also bring lens cleaning materials.
