Migration Safaris

Calving Season

January-Feburary-March.

Serengeti Southern Grass Plains During the Pleistocene Age, one to three million years ago, rock and ash from the volcanoes of the Ngorongoro area covered what is today the Serengeti Plains. The fine-grained ash contained many salts, such as potassium, sodium, and calcium, much of which is still present on the surface today. During the seasonal rains, these salts are washed down into the soil where they precipitate, or come out of solution. After spending the dry season in the wetter northern woodland of Serengeti, the wildebeest follow the seasonal rains south and move onto the Serengeti Plans. The shallow, water-holding soil and over a million grazing mouths maintain the plains in a super-productive growing state. With ample food, the wildebeest females produce and suckle their calves. The wet season is also the time of year for predators to fatten up. With abundance of young and inexperienced herbivores, lions, cheetahs and hyenas have an endless supply of food.

        Carnage Season

        April- May

The migration is at its peak on the Serengeti short grass plain between Naabi Hill and Seronera. This is the best place to observe the "mega-herd " particularly during the months of April and May when the calves start to feed with their mothers and the predators also enjoy their own feed. The best part of it all is that very few tourists frequent the park during these months, which gives the lucky visitor the opportunity to have more privacy while viewing the wildlife.

              Grumeti River Crossing Season

              June-July

When the monsoon rain stops in June, the plains dry out and the wildebeest move west towards Lake Victoria in search of pasture and rains. The local climate of Lake Victoria, the second largest fresh water lakes in the world, produces its own rainfall near the lakeshore during these months. The grumeti River is and important component of the ecosystem in that in addition to providing water to support terrestrial and avian wildlife, it also forms a well-known natural hazard in the path of the annual wildebeest migration on the western side of the park. The Grumeti is home to the largest Nile crocodile population in the ecosystem. Measuring sixteen feet long and weighing over one ton, many people consider the crocodile the last surviving beast of the dinosaur age. Ruminants like wildebeest and zebra have to drink water on a daily basis; the Grumeti crocodiles feast on them when they come to the river to do just that. One the western side of the park, the Musabi and Masira grass plains await the migration and extend and connect with Grumeti Reserve's Sabora Plains. All in all, they provide enough forage for the herds that make it across the river during these months.

Camp location Lobo/Bolongonja/Kogatende During these months, we move to Northern Serengeti where the action will take place. It is the annual Mara River Crossing at Kogatende at the northern most point of Serengeti National Park. Our main camp is located in Lobo, but according to the movement of the herds, we can move to Kogatende or Bolongonja depending on where the animals are. The Lobo highlands offer spectacular landscapes and boast of homing the largest lion pride in the whole of Serengeti.
